Ocean Waste Water Treatment Plant in San Francisco treats 20% of
San Francisco’s Waste Water..
Its a newer plant and the Waste Water it is treated underground, which helps with oder control. As a visitor the underground treatment plant is very pungent, it’s a bit overwelmming, but we got passed it. The coolest part of the tour was learning how the
San Francisco Public Utilites Commission, re- uses what it creates, for instance, the solid waste has to be treated with heat, to kill the bacteria. 50% of the heat source is methane gas that the solid waste naturally produces as it breaks down, they are hoping to actually get off the grid via methane gas ,in the near future, and even have the methane gas be converted to electricity for the buildings. They also process cooking oil from restaurants and turn that into bio-diesel and drive bio-diesel cars that are running on the bio diesel fuel that they produce.
All in all, it was a very informative and fascinating tour. You walk away thinking about things more deeply.
